COBRA Subsidy Extension Passed
April 20, 2010

On April 15, 2010 Congress has extended the Defense Appropriations Act. This act extends the current ARRA subsidy as follows:

  • Additional two months of eligibility - involuntary terminations through May 31, 2010
  • Maximum period for receiving the subsidy remains the same at 15 months
Here are some known other facts:
  • The current subsidy of 65% remains the same
  • Employees must be involuntarily let go from their positions, not eligible for Medicare or any other group health insurance to be eligible.
  • The subsidy is available for all group health plan coverage's (health, dental, vision).
  • The new law provides retroactive eligibility for individuals who lost their jobs after the prior COBRA subsidy expired on March 31, 2010.
  • The model notices have not yet been updated with the new date of May 31, 2010.
